Addition squares

We've kicked off our addition unit with a fun brain teaser. The numbers you insert into the boxes must add up vertically and horizontally to the totals outside of the boxes.

Estimation

Today students in Room 7 engaged in some terrific group work. As a part of our estimation unit, groups were given the task of estimating how many chairs are in R.F. Morrison School. This had to be done without leaving our classroom. Students were sharing fabulous ideas regarding strategies to base their estimations on. Communication, respect, and sharing were all a big part of this morning's lesson and activity. Our groups estimations were 327, 352, 290, 300, and 315. The highest estimate and lowest estimate were only 62 chairs apart; great use of estimation strategies Room 7!!

Our next step is to find out the exact answer to this problem. Stay posted for more!

Emotion poems

Room 7 students worked on finishing printed drafts of their emotion poems. They turned out great! We will be creating borders to frame them next.

Hundred chart tic tac toe

Ask your children about hundred chart tic tac toe. We had a great time playing it today, and it helps develop a sense of how to work with a hundred chart.

Classroom plant science experiment

We came into school on Monday and saw that our plant is beginning to die. We decided to set up a real science experiment to figure out how we can save our plant. Students had a hypothesis that the plant was getting too much sunlight, not enough water, and needed to be turned. Our procedure is to move the plant away from the window, turn it around, and give it 3/4 of a cup of water each school day. Stay posted for our observations.

Habitats

Room 7 is covering Habitats at the moment. We are discussing what makes up a habitat, plant and animal needs, and how a habitat provides the necessities of life. We are hoping to end our unit with some hands on building of habitats.

Tomorrow's Brain Breakfast!

Every morning we do a short math activity from different parts of the curriculum. We call it our Brain Breakfast!

Finished driftwood art!

Here are some examples of our finished driftwood art! Room 7 did an awesome job while working on creating our driftwood animals. We kept the room and our clothes clean, we worked well together, we shared, and we had fun!

French!

Our student's have been experiencing many firsts in French. We've been working hard counting all the way to 20, saying the date, and simple greetings. I am looking forward to seeing where our learning goes.

Math - Rounding

We have begun our math program with a unit focussing on Place Value and Number Sense. Rounding numbers has been a skill that has been tricky for some to pick up on. We are must remember our rules and when to use them.

4 or less = rounding down

5 or more = rounding up

Please ask your children about what they've learned about rounding numbers.

Working together in Room 7

We have been learning about the many benefits of working together in groups. Since our focus on this we have seen many improvements in the way students in room 7 have been working together. We are helping eachother out, offering advice, giving compliments, and sharing.

We are hoping to continue refining our new group work skills as the year progresses.
